sweet tequila blues...

so many things happened in the last week that i'm just struggling to remember them all. it was a pretty bad week infact but it gave birth to a new start so i'm going to keep this blog dormant but not extinct by posting every few months. currently, trying to pack my room to clear out unwanted stuff...at least thats how i always unclutter my mind.

perhaps the most eventful of all was the first car accident i had last monday. well, no one was injured but it definitely burned a hole in my pocket and left my family $2500 poorer. i was driving along benoi road on my way back and was turning into aye when the stupid truck driver jam braked all of a sudden when there were no cars along the aye entrance. obviously i just slammed into his back and based on this dumb singaporean law that the driver behind is always wrong, it was my fault. the damage on the truck was minimal with only the rear lower bar slightly bent so luckily the foreign worker, after taking my particulars, went back to his boss who did not pursue the matter. but my car was rather badly damaged in the front...repair costs went up to 4k+ bucks but the insurance made sure we only had to pay 2.5k no matter what, excluding the percentage losses on the ncb (no-claim bonus). it could be only 500 bucks if i was above 23 and had a 1 yr+ license but unfortunately i wasnt. stupid insurance policy with terms and conditions in small print too. but at least no one was hurt or my license would be gone. my dad had to drive a replacement car for a week because of that. but car is repaired and i drove to camp as usual again today.

secondly is my university applications. after i recieved my ntu leter offering me econs, i was in a dilemma between that and engineering because i never really expected to actually get econs. but i still had to wait for nus's letter before i could decide. it came really late, just 3 days before the closing of the joint acceptance platform and offered me nus mechanical engineering. got rejected from nus bba and ise as expected. so how? headache la. half of me wanted to go ahead and take the plunge into econs but the other half wanted to stay safe and take engineering. in between all this, i had an extensice investigation into the forums and nus fass also came into the picture, after realising a step too late that bidding for majors there was not difficult to achieve. so like all rational individuals, i weighed the pros and cons and did a cba.

nus mechanical engineering:
pros
-very established and has a relatively high ranking in tech (abt 11th in 2008 and top 10 in previous years)
-career prospects are quite good
-wider range of jobs to go into, even banking jobs are available
cons
-got quite alot of lab sessions which i wasnt quite predisposed to in jc and sec sch
-seems quite tough to excel in, difficult course (bell curve? lol)
-planning for modules seems like a headache in this system
-highly competitive

ntu econs:
pros
-direct entry into econs major
-rather straightforward and easy to plan
-small class size, easy to approach lecturers and gain aid
-ntu easier to score and get honours?
-more girls? (not exactly a + point, might even be bad, serving as distractions ;) )
cons
-direct honours so die die must complete 4 yrs even with the possibility of not meeting the cut-off and ending up with a merit or less
-heard that it is a difficult course, although less so that engineering
-super new faculty (not established, inexperienced?)
-i'm not exactly into probability and stats so i might not do that well in that
-i find ntu too chi-na and far away for me so its abit of a turn-off
-ntu is not really a social sci and humanities uni

well....there was just too much to weigh and compare (thought of it for a whole month) so i just followed my gut and clicked on nus mech. hopefully, i will not regret this for the next couple of years. since i'm going to suffer in uni, why not suffer and get a more recognised degree :). i think i'm sick.

awyway, i signed up for an engineering e-prep course to hopefully reduce the pain in uni. pray it helps haha.

lastly, i failed my ippt for a third time in ns lol, this time i didnt even complete my 2.4 due to cramps in my stomach area. so apparently my co was pissed and asked to accompany him for his morning runs to pass it. today was the first, and i'm not sure if i'm going anymore haha. it was true that he ran long distances but his pace was rather slow, so much so that i was wondering if he was training me or he just wanted a running buddy lol. but it was pretty bad that he made us bash through the jungle halfway through the run to pick durians, cos it was 'durian season'. bashing through the flora and fauna in pt kit to find durians =disgusting , definitely not priceless...

so bye blog for another couple of months, or until i find inspiration to blog, or something big happens, whichever is earlier.

day of videos and shots

i'm still pretty much working slowly but surely through my army days trying to avoid trouble as much as possible (to ensure an 'extra'-free ns life), even when my supervisor is trying to tell us to think of new ideas to 'improve the pool'.

yesterday was estate cohesion so we had a half day to have lunch and mix around with our fellow estate branch colleagues. lunch was paid using the welfare fund (lol), and was at sakura at Jurong West Sports and Recreation Centre. no idea where is that? i had no idea until all it took was a 5mins drive there in my friend's car from camp. but it was more like a regular outing with us just talking and stuffing ourselves with food, ending with a picture. ppl were itching to leave the place before the thing ended.

had a interview by cld of clme today about gen y ppl. it was kinda suprising to have ppl just popping into my office to ask for an interview cos this doesnt happen everyday. well, it was a lucky thing i wasnt sleeping on the table then, otherwise it would be pretty awkward haha. it was pretty wierd to sit by the pool in the scorching sun in the bloody uncomfortable lifeguard shirt. it was like only the third time i was in front of a live running camera (once in sji for some video thinggi and in ac for pw) so i guess i pretty much sucked at it and had a couple of NGs.  furthermore, it was rather imprompto so i wasnt prepared. the questions were stuff about the difference and the uniqueness of gen y ppl as compared with other generations and it was gonna to be shown to poly and jc ppl and army personnel with crabs and stars on their shoulders....so well, if you ever see me in an saf video some where, pls understand that my freedom of speech was restricted by a piece of paper with possible responses i could give. nah, just joking, just tell me where you saw it lol.

the sierra girls came in the afternoon for a booking just made in the morning so i had to take it even though i could already go home. one of them could not even step off the side of the pool into the water so it was rather worrying that she had to jump of the 5m board in no.4 in 5 mths time. the pti noel, who was taking the training, was ord-ing today with weihoong so cheers to them. its a pretty happy thing to know that ppl you know are leaving their NS life cos you would know that yours is drawing to an end too. but i still have a year left to go T.T... had a picture with noel outside the lifeguard office, hopefully he remembers to send me the pic.

ps: i just bought a 1TB HDD for $178. whoot :)

freaked out

just a quick one before dinner. a couple of hours ago, a cadet had fits in like the centre of the pool, playing some games. luckily the pti was just next to her and managed to tow her to safety. the medic was like stoning at the side of the pool and didnt even know what on earth was going on. but i guess that he wouldnt know what to do even if he knew what was going on. he just carried the stretcher down the stairs after i pulled her out of the pool. she was frozen like a board and could not move but thank god she was alright, it was probably exhaustion or cramps. she recovered after awhile of rest. its the second drown in the centre of the pool incident i've encountered so far, not counting the ones from the diving board. a bloody scary experience which reminds us of the responibilities we are accountable for.

CNY Blues

chinese new year is in about a week but this time i feel no vibe coming from the festive season. everything just seems rather dead. just had my reunion dinner at my aunt's place yesterday but it feels like just another gathering. although the usual noise was there, it felt like something was missing. was it that the kids have grown up and become more mature, or that they had important exams to tackle in the period, or the issue with my cousin not seeing eye to eye with her parents, i cannot tell. it had the atmosphere of "we are really happy to meet up but i have something really important to do so lets see each other another time".

gah, hope the visiting would be much better anyway.

last fri safti organised a dead dumb event known as a cohesion event -.-, like we dont know each other well enough flinging words of spite at each other on ordinary days. there was a treasure hunt in the morning which wasnt too bad. we were supposed to go around the camp to find the locations where a set of pictures were taken and jolt a couple of numbers or notes on a paper which would be marked. they called it a treasure hunt. but i'm already surprised that the army can think of such an intelligent game, so no complains. i ran half the camp in 5 mins to look for the last clue though, must have broken some sort of record.

lunch at the cookhouse followed, then we took a bus to jp for a movie, guess what, transporter 3. the very show i condemned because of it shallow storyline and the whiny freckled (thats an understatement) actress. but it was still a forced event and there was free popcorn and drinks so we just went to endure through it. but halfway through the show, a couple of us pretended to go to the restroom and sneaked into another open cinema hall for another show lol. when the adverts were showing, we were thinking what kids show was showing then, cos most of the adverts were for children. then it hit us, crap, we were going to watch ponyo lol. but it was a free movie and we decided not to switch shows anymore. ponyo turned out to be surprisingly good. the graphics was not that high quality, but the artwork was amazing cos every scene was hand drawn, so the images were all different. the storyline was pretty unique too. being a fairytale, it would be very appealing to kids, but hey, i became a kid throughout the entire length or the movie.

this post ended up a little grouchy but well, thats because i still have more than a year to my ord date, gah. haha.

Christmas!!!

lots of stuff to talk about this time after my long time off from this blog. (i heard you, mr gan).

but first before i start, heres a song delicated to all NSFs who cant wait to get out of that s***hole, but i cant seem to put it into autoplay in full so heres the link, beautiful song, the NSF dream.

My! My! Time flies! One step and we're on the moon, next step into the stars
My! My! Time flies! Maybe we could be there soon, a one way ticket to mars

My! My! Time flies! A man underneath a tree, an apple falls on his head
My my time flies a man wrote a symphony, it's 1812

My! My! Time flies! Four guys across abbey road, one forgot to wear shoes
My! My! Time flies! A rap on a rhapsody, a king who's still in the news, a king to sing you the blues

My! My! Time flies! A man in a winter sleigh, white white white as the snow
My! My! Time flies! A new day is on its way, so let's let yesterday go
Could be we step out again
Could be tomorrow but then,
Could be 2010 (ord loh!)

but the current song playing, life on the moon, probably kinda abstractly describes my army situation.

back to business, my christmas loot this year hehe, got 4 t-shirts for myself and a guess watch ($159 after 30% disc). hmm, i guess i'm kinda contributing to the economy? as for presents, lots of biscuits and chocolates from camp and a body foam bubble which my mum burst. i was glad my $10 bucks gift exchange item in which i gave a glass vase had a box of marks and spencer biscuits in return and not like some poor guy who only got a small box of pocky from a miserly dxo. well, thanks to two of my 'extended family members', i recieved two heartwarming greeting cards too. kinda makes me feel guilty for not returning the favour every year though.

the car also went haywire today when i tried to start the engine. it showed battery flat when i tried to crank the engine up at starhub centre so my dad started panicking and said that i should have started the engine before adjusting the seat. thus we waited for 15mins in the carpark for AA then mum suddenly came up with the brillant idea of checking with the car distributor salesman. it turned out to be all but a bloody lame mistake made by my dad before he parked. he forgot to put the gear to park before turning off the engine -.- so the car's safety mechanism was so that the car couldnt move until the gear was switched to park before the engine could be switched on lol. its was a hilarious scare though, thought we were doomed to be stuck at the car
park for another hour.

had a few unhappy moments and minor arguments with my parents in the days before christmas but i guess its all over now. my mum seems to be suffering from an awful lot of illnesses regarding the eye and teeth this year, so i hope next year would be much better for her.

playing GE recently, i know its a little too late but well, i have the power of time on my hands.

ps: Australia was a damn good movie, probably one of the best shows of 2008. and i wanna go k-box!
